Cleaner Water for Asheville, NC Residents
Several methods are used to make water suitable for drinking. Carbon filtration is one of the most popular methods and is used, in some capacity, in nearly all forms of water purification. Carbon filtration systems use activated carbon to remove impurities from water. These systems can effectively eliminate metals, chlorine, and other contaminants that may compromise the taste and safety of your potable water. Carbon filters improve the taste and appearance of water and can also lengthen the lifespan of your plumbing and appliances by inhibiting mineral build up. How does a carbon filtration system work?
A source of carbon (often peat, coconut shells, or bituminous coal) is the foundation for most any filtration system. To craft the filter, the carbon source is heated in the absence of oxygen to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. After the impurities have baked off, a 1600 degree steam treatment activates the carbon. Steam from this process leaves carbon granules with cracks and pores. These imperfections house the chemicals and contaminants that is extracted from the water. Similar to magnetic attraction, impurities in the water are drawn and stored in these cracks and pores. This process is called adsorption.
What can a carbon filter remove?
There are two main kinds of carbon filters: carbon block filters and granular activated carbon (GAC) filters. As their name indicates, GAC filters are filled with carbon granules that “polish” the water and give it a nice taste and odor. GAC filters are used to remove nitrates, hydrogen sulfide, pesticides, and VOCs. Block filters are made from carbon pieces compressed together. Their flow rate is lower than that of GACs, but they provide finer filtration.
Both GAC and block filters can improve the taste and odor of water. A carbon block can filter sediments, pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants. GAC filters remove chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and more.
